    Campaign Overview

Launched in 2019 ahead of the COP25 climate summit in Madrid, +1.5°C Changes Everything was a creative collaboration between WWF Spain and the Museo del Prado that used art to communicate the urgent reality of climate change. The campaign digitally reimagined four iconic masterpieces by artists including Velázquez, Goya, Sorolla, and Patinir, transforming them into powerful visualisations of a world altered by rising global temperatures.

The adapted artworks depicted climate-related impacts such as rising sea levels, extreme drought, climate-driven refugee displacement, and the mass extinction of species By showing how even beloved works of cultural heritage would be transformed when reimagined in a +1.5°C warmer world, the campaign made the consequences of climate change more tangible and emotionally engaging for a broad audience.

Combining the cultural influence of one of the world’s most renowned museums with WWF’s environmental expertise, the campaign provided an alternative to traditional climate communications.
This creative collaboration bridged classic art with environmental activism, transforming centuries-old cultural heritage into a stark, urgent warning about the planet’s future.

Designed to engage the public beyond typical scientific reports, the initiative powerfully illustrated how a global temperature rise of just 1.5°C would irreversibly alter world history, biodiversity, and human society, prompting worldwide media coverage and driving action on climate change.

    Outcomes & Results

+1.5°C Changes Everything achieved extensive international reach, generating worldwide media coverage and attracting attention in more than 50 countries. By reinterpreting well-known masterpieces through the lens of climate change, the campaign created a compelling visual story that resonated far beyond traditional environmental audiences.

The partnership with the Museo del Prado demonstrated how collaborations with cultural institutions can broaden the appeal and accessibility of environmental messages. By connecting climate science with familiar works of art, the campaign engaged audiences who might not otherwise interact with climate-focused communications, helping to spark conversation and raise awareness of the urgency of limiting global warming.
